Sunny Isles Beach

History

The city's history dates back to 1920 when Harvey Baker Graves, a private investor, purchased land for development as a tourist resort, initially naming it "Sunny Isles, the America Riviera." The completion of the Haulover Bridge in 1925 facilitated access from Miami Beach, attracting developers who transformed the area with canals, inlets, and waterfront properties along Biscayne Bay. Sunny Isles Beach underwent a name change from North Miami Beach to Sunny Isles in 1931, ultimately adopting its current name in 1997. In 1936, Milwaukee malt magnate Kurtis Froedtert acquired Sunny Isles, and the construction of the Sunny Isles Pier made it a popular destination. The 1950s saw the development of the Golden Shores area, marked by the construction of the first single-family homes. The subsequent decades witnessed the rise of more than 30 motels along Collins Avenue, collectively known as "Motel Row," with unique and exotic designs that attracted tourists from far and wide.

The historic Sunny Isles Pier, designated as such in 1982, went through a restoration process in the early-mid 1980s, reopening to the public in 1986. Unfortunately, it suffered significant damage during Hurricane Wilma in October 2005 but was ultimately remodeled and reopened as the Newport Fishing Pier in June 2013. In 1997, the citizens of the area voted to incorporate as a municipality, leading to the renaming of Sunny Isles as Sunny Isles Beach. The early 2000s real estate boom spurred major redevelopment, primarily consisting of high-rise condominiums and some hotels, along the beach side of Collins Avenue, leading to the replacement of many historic one- and two-story motels that once defined "Motel Row." This transformation continued with the construction of high-rises like Regalia and The Mansions at Acqualina, enhancing the city's reputation as a dynamic and desirable coastal destination.
